HC Deb 09 December 1926 vol 200 cc2311-2W
Mr. THURTLE

asked the Minister of Health if his Department is in a position to state the amount of money paid by way of contributions to the health insurance scheme from the date of the Armistice to the year ending 31st December, 1923: and the amount actually paid out to insured persons by way of benefits during the same period?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The amount of money paid by way of contributions to the health insurance scheme in England and Wales for the seven years from 1st January, 1919, to 31st December, 1925, was £154,000,000. Of the amount of 414.3,000,000 spent on benefits in England and Wales during the same period, £86,000,000 represents amounts actually paid out to insured persons by way of benefits, and £57,000,000 the cost of medical benefit provided for them through insurance committees. The information asked for as respects the part of the year 1918 subsequent to the date of the Armistice is not available, as such statistics are compiled for complete calendar years only.
