HC Deb 09 December 1926 vol 200 cc2309-10W
Mr. SHORT

asked the Minister of Health the total number of persons in receipt of Poor Law relief on 30th November, 1926?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The total number of persons in receipt of Poor Law relief in England and Wales on the 20th November, 1926, the latest dates for which figures are available, was approximately 2,213,000. This number does not include lunatics in county and county borough asylums, casuals and persons in receipt of domiciliary medical relief only, of whom there are at present approximately 120,000.

Mr. PRESTON

asked the Minister of Health if, taking the areas of the country which are classed as necessitous, he will state in each case the payments of Poor Law relief for the month of April, and for each succeeding month to the end of November?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I know of no classification of Poor Law areas such as my hon. Friend has in mind, and I regret, therefore, that I am unable to give him the information for which he asks.
