§ Mr. GROVESasked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware of the lack of attendance at school on the part of many of the West Ham children consequent upon their visits to, and working at, fruit and hop picking; whether he is aware that his inspector called special attention to this fact in his Report, dated 26th May, on the South Hallsville School, within the county borough of West Ham; and whether, as it would be a loss of wage if these children did not accompany their parents, he can consider some grant to mothers which would keep both mothers and children from such occupations and allow the children therefore to regularly attend school?
§ Lord E. PERCYI am aware of the position as represented in the first two parts of the question, but I am afraid that I cannot undertake to apply educational funds to the purpose suggested in the third part.
