HC Deb 31 July 1924 vol 176 cc2279-80W
Sir J. NALL

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware of the lack of British news broadcast for the information of ocean-going steamers, whilst German news messages are broadcast freely; and whether the Oxford Press programme can be made available for ships by improving the efficiency of the Oxford station?

Mr. HARTSHORN

Special news bulletins are broadcast daily, via the Oxford station for reception by ships on behalf of the Marconi and Radio Communication Companies, respectively. In addition, the British official news messages, transmitted thrice daily via the Oxford station, are picked up by ocean-going steamers when conditions are not unfavourable. The range of the Oxford station is, however, limited: and although the best arrangements will be made that are possible within the scope of that station, I fear the difficulties cannot be entirely removed until the new Rugby station is working.
