HC Deb 24 July 1924 vol 176 c1550W

asked the President of the Board of Education if it is the policy of the Board to encourage local education authorities to provide school libraries in individual schools or to recommend cooperation with public libraries in the provision of general children's libraries?

I regard both methods of supplying books for school children as very desirable. I may refer the hon. Member to Article 20 of the Code, which provides thatin cases where the school does not possess a school library, arrangements should be made to supply books for the reading of the children by co-operation with organisations existing for the purpose or otherwise. The Board's Secondary School Building Regulations prescribe that in every school it is essential that there should be a room furnished as a library in which pupils can have facilities for consulting and working from books of reference.
