asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the grants by the Unemployment Grants Committee in respect of capital expenditure in 1922–23, 1923–24, and the first three months from 1st April to 30th June, 1924?

The amount of loan approved for grant in respect of capital expenditure by local authorities on unemployment schemes in the periods in question was as follows:

1924–25 (1st April to 30th June) 2,303,210

In addition, schemes promoted by public utility companies have been approved to the extent of £1,734,561 for 1923–24 and £223,346 in 1924–25 (1st April to 30th June).

The grants paid in the periods in question have been as follows:

These figures represent contributions towards the annual charges on loans raised by local authorities in carrying out approved schemes. In addition, £41 was paid during the last-mentioned period to a public utility company. For the annual burden on the Exchequer for the next 15 years the hon.
