HC Deb 03 July 1924 vol 175 c1521W
Captain BULLOCK

asked the Minister of Labour the total numbers of unemployed on the Saturday in each of the last four weeks, and the reasons for any increase in the totals?

Mr. SHAW

The number of persons on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain in each of the last four weeks is as follows:—

2nd June 1,002,915
9th June 1,027,515
16th June 1,052,500
23rd June 1,013,500
There is each week a considerable change in the individuals on the registers, and the increase or decrease is ordinarily the net effect of fluctuations in a great many trades and districts. It may be stated, however, that the net increases on 9th and 16th June were largely the result of extended Whitsun holidays.
