HC Deb 27 February 1924 vol 170 c482W
Mr. LUMLEY

asked the Minister of Health if he will consider the advisability of establishing local rent boards, representing landlords and tenants, to decide, instead of the County Court Judge, the best means of avoiding hardship to either party which might result from the working of Section 4 of the Rent Act of 1923?

Mr. WHEATLEY

I will consider the hon. Member's suggestion.

Mr. WILLIAM HENDERSON

asked the Minister of Health whether his attention has been drawn to the case of Mr. Popham, Hertford Road, Enfield, who is being evicted from the premises on the 30th June next; whether he is aware that Mr. Popham has resided in the house for 38 years, and that he has no arrears of rent; that the man is a bootmaker and repairer who has built up a business, and that the order for him to give up possession, without the provision of alternative accommodation, will mean the loss of his livelihood; and whether he will consider the desirability of introducing legislation providing for compensation for goodwill in cases where a man in business is compelled to surrender premises by order of the Courts?

Mr. WHEATLEY

My attention has not previously been drawn to this case, and I shall be glad if my hon. Friend will send me further particulars in regard to it.
