§ Mr. NICHOLasked the Secretary for Scotland if it is the intention of the Government to introduce legislation for the purpose of removing the heavy financial barrier which exists at present for entrants to the Faculty of Advocates?
Mr. ADAMSONThe total fees payable in connection with admission to the Faculty of Advocates, in the case of an intrant not above 24 years of age on admission, and exclusive of fees for examination, amount to £355 15s Of this sum, £50 is Stamp Duty and £55 is payable to the Widows' Fund. The remainder goes to defray the expenses of the Faculty, chiefly those connected with their library. As my hon. Friend doubtless knows, arrangements for the transfer1548W of the library to the nation are at present in progress. It may be that when that transfer is carried through the Faculty will find it possible to reconsider the payment required from intrants for the purposes of the library. I am not in a position to give any undertaking regarding legislation such as my hon. Friend suggests.
