HC Deb 02 May 1923 vol 163 cc1395-6W
Mr. AMMON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the figures given on page 156 of the Third Report of the Committee on National Expenditure in respect of the comparative remuneration of officers of the fighting Services and civil servants are based in the case of the former on the rates of pay and allowances drawn by officers holding ordinary shore or regimental appointments, and in the case of the latter on the salaries drawn by civil servants employed at Departmental headquarters in London; whether the naval and military staff officers serv- ing at the Admiralty or War Office receive special remuneration considerably in excess of the figures given in this Report; whether a proportion of this remuneration is paid free of Income Tax, whereas no part of civil servants' salaries is similarly treated; and, if so, whether he will invite the attention of the Committee investigating the standard of remuneration of State servants to these points?

Major BOYD-CARPENTER

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative; staff officers serving at the Admiralty or War Office receive somewhat higher rates of pay. Certain allowances received by naval and military officers are at present not taxed, but the question is under consideration by the Board of Inland Revenue. With regard to the last part of the question, all the relevant facts will no doubt be before the Committee.
