§ Sir A. HOLBROOKasked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether tenders have been accepted for the supply of Japanese peas to the Royal Navy; and whether he will see that the supplies to the men of the Fleet are restricted to home-grown produce, in order to give encouragement to the agricultural industry?
Commander EYRE:S-MONSELL:I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to my reply of the 5th March to the bon. Member for Lincoln (Mr. A. T. Davies). As stated in that reply, the Admiralty give a very substantial preference to home products, but the restriction he suggests would involve too heavy a burden on Navy Votes when the difference in price is as much as 50 per cent., as was the case with the Japanese peas.
