HC Deb 17 April 1923 vol 162 c1905W

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is prepared to reconsider the reinstitution of the penny rate for postage of letters and one-half-penny rate for postcards?

asked the Postmaster-General whether, in order to meet the wishes of the commercial community, he will make provision for the transmission of letters not exceeding ½ oz. in weight at a penny rate of postage; whether he will give some increased facilities for communication on halfpenny postcards and whether he will substitute for the existing charge for parcel postage a scale of charges based upon the weight of the article transmitted, but starting at ½ lb. instead of 2 lbs.?

The reductions in postal charges which it is proposed to effect this year were announced by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his Budget Speech yesterday. I regret it is not practicable at present to return to 1d. postage or id. postcards.
