HC Deb 12 April 1923 vol 162 cc1308-9W
Brigadier-General COLVIN

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War why officers of His Majesty's Army are no longer permitted to wear uniform when occupying the office of High Sheriff; and whether the uniform of a Deputy-Lieutenant is held to be a military uniform?

Lieut.-Colonel GUINNESS

The duties of High Sheriff are purely civil, and the wearing of military uniform in connection with them would infringe the general rule that military uniform may not be worn by ex-officers or retired officers except on military occasions. Officers on the Active List are not eligible to be. High Sheriff. Deputy-Lieutenant's uniform, however, is not military, and may be worn by a Deputy-Lieutenant when discharging the duty of High Sheriff.
