HC Deb 21 March 1922 vol 152 cc267-8W
Mr. MALONE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many British officials paid by His Majesty's Government are employed in China; how many are employed in the service of the Chinese Government; and how many are paid by the Chinese Government?

Mr. HARMSWORTH

The number of British officials paid by His Majesty's Government on the Foreign Office Vote (diplomatic, consular and commercial diplomatic services) and employed in China is 106. There are no British officials on the Foreign Office active service list employed in the service of the Chinese Government or paid by that government. There are, of course, a number of British subjects employed and paid by the Chinese Government in their customs, salt and other departments, but details are not available. The hon. Member should refer to the Admiralty and the War Office respectively for information as to the number of British naval and military officials employed in China.
