HC Deb 09 February 1922 vol 150 cc336-7W
Mr. N. MACLEAN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can inform the House the date upon which the Government intend to resume the issue of gold as currency?

Sir R. HORNE

It is the intention of His Majesty's Government to permit the re-establishment of an unrestricted market for gold in London at the earliest date at which the state of the exchanges renders this course possible and desirable. The question whether and to what extent the public will then return to the use of gold coins in place of notes for ordinary purposes of currency is one which must ultimately depend mainly on the action of the community itself.
