HC Deb 09 February 1922 vol 150 cc317-8W
Major GLYN

asked the Secretary for Scotland what is the total annual sum paid to teachers throughout Scotland in salaries; how this money is divided as between the different grades of teachers; what was the total administration cost of education in Scotland for the 12 months November, 1920, to November, 1921; and what amount of this represented payment to members of various education authorities both as expenses and compensation for loss of pay suffered through attending meetings of the education authority?

Mr. MUNRO

According to the returns furnished by education authorities, expenditure on teachers' salaries in Scotland, including payments for continuation class work, amounted to £7,165,442 for the year ended 15th May, 1921. Without calling for special returns, which would involve considerable time and ex- pense, it is not possible to say how this sum was divided as between the different grades of teachers. The expenditure of educational authorities on administration for the year ended 15th May, 1921—the financial year most nearly corresponding to the period specified by my hon. and gallant Friend—was £401,038. The estimate of payments to members of education authorities as travelling expenses and compensation for loss of remuneration suffered through attending meetings was £18,585.
