§ Mr. MUNROAccording to the returns furnished by education authorities, expenditure on teachers' salaries in Scotland, including payments for continuation class work, amounted to £7,165,442 for the year ended 15th May, 1921. Without calling for special returns, which would involve considerable time and ex-318W pense, it is not possible to say how this sum was divided as between the different grades of teachers. The expenditure of educational authorities on administration for the year ended 15th May, 1921—the financial year most nearly corresponding to the period specified by my hon. and gallant Friend—was £401,038. The estimate of payments to members of education authorities as travelling expenses and compensation for loss of remuneration suffered through attending meetings was £18,585.
