§ Mr. D. SOMERVILLEasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the latest figures on unemployment show that nearly 253,000 are out of work in the engineering trades and 130,000 in the shipbuilding trades, and that these industries normally provide most of the work in Barrow: and whether, in view of the very high rate of unemployment in the town, he will do his best to ensure the maximum amount of aid from the Unemployment Grants Committee and other kindred organisations?
§ Sir M. BARLOWI am fully aware of the unemployment position in Barrow and the dependence of the town upon the shipbuilding and engineering industries. I can assure my hon. Friend that any schemes submitted from the locality have received and will continue to receive the most careful and sympathetic consideration from the various Government authorities concerned.
