HC Deb 04 August 1922 vol 157 c1897W
Mr. GILBERT

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if he will give the list and amounts of grants or guarantees given under the Trade Facilities Act which will help unemployment in London and the Greater London area; and whether further applications from these areas are still under consideration?

Mr. YOUNG

The Treasury have guaranteed, or have expressed their willingness, to give guarantees in respect of the following schemes in the London area:

£
Harland and Wolff, Ltd. 1,200,000
James Powell and Sons (White-friars), Ltd. 50,000
Underground Railways 6,458,000
South Eastern and Chatham Railways 6,500,000
Merton Board Mill, Ltd. 100,000
Pickerdite and Co., Ltd. 17,500
Lee Conservancy Board 100,000
£114,425,500
The whole of the above amounts will not be expended on labour in London, as some of the money will be used for the purchase of machinery and materials manufactured in other parts of the country. On the other hand, it is probable that, as a result of other guarantees, a certain number of contracts will be placed in London.

In view of the fact that employment is net necessarily provided only in the vicinity of the site of the works, it is not possible to give a list of the applications at present under consideration which would affect the employment position in London.
