§ Mr. RAFFANasked the Secretary of State for War whether a new institute is being erected for members of the Territorial forces at Shanklin, Isle of Wight; whether a promise has been given that facilities for the sale of intoxicating drink will be provided if 50 members join the institute; and, if so, whether the matter will be reconsidered, in view of the objection to wet canteens being associated with institutes of this character expressed by the abstaining parents of young Territorials?
423W
§ Lieut.-Colonel STANLEYThe answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. I have no information as to whether a licence has been applied for or promised. A grant of a licence rests with the discretion of the local licensing authorities, and I am not prepared to intervene in the matter.
