asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the weekly cost of the emergency measures taken on account of the coal stoppage, including the pay of the Army and Navy and Air Force Reserve and the Defence Corps; and what is the cost of the special measures taken by other Departments?
The running cost of the Reserves, the Defence Force, and other emergency measures is £692,000 a week, that of the Defence Force alone being £375,000. These figures are exclusive of initial and terminal expenditure relating to the Reserves and Defence Force estimated at about £2,550,000. The total cost to date of the measures taken by Civil Departments as shown in sub-heads A, B, and C of the Supplementary Estimate for Emergency Services is £260,000. This excludes Government purchases of coal for essential services.
