HC Deb 02 June 1921 vol 142 cc1261-2W
Mr. G. BARKER

asked the Minister of Pensions why Trooper Williams, of the Gloucester Hussars (Yeomanry), who joined up in robust health in August, 1914, was discharged from the service in October, 1914; is he aware that Williams, while exercising two horses, was knocked down and received an injury to the shoulder; that subsequently a cancerous tumour formed on the shoulder, from which Williams died in March, 1917, leaving a widow and child dependent; that the widow applied for a pension owing to the death of her husband from the cause stated and the medical tribunal has refused to grant a pension; and on what grounds the tribunal came to this decision, and institute a fresh inquiry into this case?

Mr. MACPHERSON

Trooper Williams was discharged medically unfit on 4th October, 1914. The cause of his death 2½ years later was, after careful consideration of all the available evidence by my medical advisers, found not to be connected with service; and this decision has recently been upheld on appeal to the Pensions Appeal Tribunal. As the decisions of the tribunal are final, I regret that the case cannot be reopened.
