HC Deb 24 February 1921 vol 138 cc1183-4W
Mr. LAMBERT

asked the President of the Board of Trade the numbers of fabric gloves imported into the United Kingdom from Germany in the year 1913, 1919 and 1920?

Sir R. HORNE

The numbers of gloves of woven fabric registered during the year 1920 as having been imported into the United Kingdom consigned from Germany, were as follow:—

Gloves of woven fabric:

Silk 5,036 dozen pairs
Other 9,962 dozen pairs

Comparable figures for the years 1913 and 1919 are not available, as fabric gloves were not shown separately in the trade statistics for those years. Thus during the year 1913 there were recorded as imported from Germany 2,511,009 dozen pairs of cotton gloves, but it is not stated what proportion of these imports were fabric gloves, and what proportion were knitted, netted or crocheted. During 1919 the corresponding number recorded was 192 dozen pairs. The imports of silk and wool fabric gloves were also not shown separately in either of the years 1913 or 1919. I may add that the statistics for 1920 show, under the heading "Hosiery," an import of 98,587 dozen pairs of knitted, netted or crocheted gloves, consigned from Germany, including 79,927 dozen pairs of cotton gloves, and 1,230 dozen pairs of woollen gloves.
