HC Deb 21 April 1921 vol 140 cc2094-5W
Mr. NEWBOULD

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he can give any figures bringing up to date Table I on page 270 of the Return of Voluntary Schools, No. 231, of 1907, especially as regards the number of schools which are private property, and the number under express or implied trusts for education, together with their accommodation and average attendance?

Mr. FISHER

The table (which relates to 1st January, 1906) includes 13,930 voluntary schools or parts of schools. On 31st March, 1920, there were 12,266 voluntary schools. The difference is due to the closure or transfer of existing schools and the opening of new schools, and also to the fact that in the return of 1907 certain parts of schools held on separate trusts were separately treated. I could not without excessive labour classify the existing voluntary schools by reference to the tenure and trusts, if any, of the premises or parts of premises in which they are conducted.
