HC Deb 04 April 1921 vol 140 c38W
Mr. GILLIS

asked the Minister of Health if he has refused to approve tenders for the erection of houses on the Mortomley housing site, in the Wortley rural district, because of the amount of such tenders; if he is aware that, having regard to local circumstances, the architect employed advises that these houses cannot be built for a less sum; and that men employed by the contractors who have tendered are drawing unemployment pay, with the consequence that neither is money being saved nor are houses being built?

Sir A. MOND

The tenders submitted by the Wortley rural district council range from £925 to £944 for non-parlour houses. Making the fullest allowance for local conditions these prices are much too high and I regret that I am unable to approve them.
