§ Major NALLasked the President of the Board of Trade whether the production of yeast is of vital importance in maintaining the bread supply of this country; whether he is aware that, owing to the state, of the exchanges, large quantities of foreign yeast are being imported, resulting in the part closing of British factories; and whether he will take steps to prevent this trade falling into foreign hand and prevent the men thereby thrown out of employment being put on to unnecessary public works at the taxpayers 'expense?
§ Sir R. HORNEThe first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, I understand that though substantial quantities are being imported, they are very much less than before the War. In so far as imports are coming from countries with collapsed exchanges (as to which I am making further inquiries), I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the answer which I gave to the hon. Member for South Nottingham (Lord H. Cavendish-Bentinck) on the 17th November, a copy of which I am sending to him.
