HC Deb 01 March 1920 vol 126 cc72-3W
Mr. MYERS

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT the number of schools in England and Wales which have been allowed to reduce the number of free places which the Regulations ordinarily require; in how many cases the Regulations have been relaxed on account of financial circumstances; and the number of secondary schools in which the number of free places is kept up to the standard prescribed by the Regulations, distinguishing in each case between schools provided by public money and foundation or other schools?

Mr. FISHER

The figures are as follow.—

to, showing in each case the number of years added; and whether on entry into the service, or subsequently?

Mr. BALDWIN

Since 1900 a number of offices have been placed under Section 4 of the Superannuation Act of 1859, but no addition of years has been given, except in the following cases:—

  1. (a) In two cases Treasury Minutes have been issued which continued, but restricted, the operation of Minutes in force prior to 1900.
  2. 73
  3. (b) By two other Minutes, covering three offices, added years have been attached. But these Minutes were required only to regularise the position in regard to posts in the case of which the Treasury had agreed in principle to the addition of years in 1877 and 1883 respective, and in respect of which formal Minutes had, through inadvertence, not been issued. The occasion of each of these Minutes was the discovery, on an officer's retirement, of the omission of the formal steps required to place his office under the Section in question. The addition of years to the three offices referred to were ten, seven and seven respectively.

All Minutes issued under the Section have been laid before Parliament.

The hon. Member is doubtless aware that the Section was repealed by Section 5 of the Superannuation Act, 1914.
