Mr. ALFRED T. DAVIESasked the Minister of Labour the total numbers of ex-officers and ex-service men who have been approved as suitable for training in various trades and professions; what number are now actually in training; and what number are waiting to begin training?
§ Dr. MACNAMARAUnder the training scheme for disabled ex-service men which is operated by the Training Department of the Ministry of Labour approximately 66,000 applications had been received up to 1st April, 1920. Of these, 21,000 were in training on that date and 27,000 were on the waiting list, the remainder had completed their training. These figures include the period when the training scheme was operated by the Ministry of Pensions. Under the Maintenance and Training Grants Scheme operated by the Appointments Department, in conjunction with the Board of1246W Education, and the Ministry of Agriculture, 49,477 ex-officers and ex-service men have been approved as suitable for training; 38,362 are actually in training, 4,383 have been finally approved, and are now waiting to begin training. This scheme covers the whole of the United Kingdom, and the figures relate to ex-officers and service men training in full-time higher education, or in practical training in offices and works and professional employment, as well as those training on farms or in forestry.
