HC Deb 04 March 1919 vol 113 c236W
Lieutenant - Colonel Sir SAMUEL HOARE

asked the Food Controller whether he is giving permits for the sale of sweets and chocolates to grocers, bakers, stores, etc., although shops that are dependent solely upon confectionery still have to turn their customers away for want of stock?

Mr. ROBERTS

The question raised by the hon. and gallant Member has already been dealt with in previous answers. I am not aware that shops dependent solely upon the sale of confectionery have to turn away their customers for want of stock. I may say, however, that the manufacturers, at the request of the Royal Commission on the Sugar Supply, are prepared, as long as is necessary, so to arrange the distribution of their output as to safeguard the smaller retailers from any temporary hardship which may arise.
