Lieutenant-Colonel MURRAYasked the First Commissioner of Works whether it is proposed to convert the flower-beds on the terraces on the east side of Hampton Court Palace and the Dutch garden 1211W into grass lawns; if so, will he state the reasons for such a proposal; and is he aware of the opposition to the carrying out of any such scheme?
§ Sir A. MONDThere is no intention at present to abolish any more beds on the terraces on the east side of Hampton Court Palace. A scheme is under consideration when money is1212W available to widen the long herbaceous border. If this be carried out, the question of the abolition of certain beds on the east side might be considered, not with a view to reduction of flowers, but to enhance the beauty and dignity of the garden. There is no question of turning the Dutch Garden into grass lawns, although some alteration of planting may be considered advisable in future years.
