HC Deb 15 December 1919 vol 123 cc65-6W
Brigadier-General CROFT

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the number of appointments to Governorships which have been made during the last ten years; how many of such appointments have been granted to officials in the Colonial service; and how Many of those who have not been so employed?

Lieut.-Colonel AMERY

Apart from the military Governorships of Gibraltar, Malta, and Bermuda, which are invariably filled by distinguished officers of the Army, fifty-eight appointments to Governorships have been made during the last ten years in the Colonies and Protectorates. Of these appointments, only five were filled by officers who had not been employed in the Colonial service.
