DAVIDSONasked the Secretary of State for War whether, while naval officers who were prisoners of war have been given allowances on account of the cost of living while in captivity, officers of the Army have not yet been given these allowances for the period of their captivity in Bulgaria and Turkey, where prices ruled exceptionally high, although a year has elapsed since their release?
§ Mr. CHURCHILLI understand that the allowances to naval officers to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers were given to naval officers who were prisoners of war in all enemy countries, and not only to those who were in captivity in Turkey and Bulgaria. They were given because otherwise naval officer prisoners of war would have been at a disadvantage as compared with Army officers. The question of according special treatment to both Navy and Army officers who were prisoners of war in Turkey and Bulgaria, in respect of the very exceptional cost of living in those countries, is under consideration, and I hope that an early decision will be arrived at.
