HC Deb 19 August 1919 vol 119 c2134W
Brigadier-General CROFT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the number of persons who accompanied the Minister-designate of Ways and Communications during his recent visit to Yorkshire on behalf of the Government; what were the number of rooms occupied by these men; and what was the cost to the State?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am informed by the Department concerned that

  1. 1. The total number of officials, clerical staff and messengers taken to Leeds by my right hon. Friend was twelve, reduced after two days to four, and one messenger. Representatives of various Government Departments either went from London or met my right hon. Friend there; some of these remained.
  2. 2. The number of rooms occupied varied according to the requirements, but at no time was there in occupation more than the minimum amount of office and bed room accommodation which would enable the necessary work to be done efficiently.
  3. 3. I am not yet in a position to state the cost to the State, as the hotel accounts have not yet been received.
