HC Deb 12 August 1919 vol 119 cc1116-7W
Colonel ASHLEY

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he will use his influence with local education authorities to ensure that, other things being equal, preference shall be given to ex-Service men for any vacancies which may occur on their staffs?

Mr. FISHER

I take no exception to the very moderate suggestion of the hon. and gallant Member that aceteris paribus preference should be given to ex-Service men, but I think that local education authorities are fully alive to their claims and that action on my part is unnecessary.

Mr. MOSLEY

asked the Minister of Labour whether ex-Service men who were in civilian employment before 24th May last are treated by the Labour Exchanges as civilians desiring employment; and whether he will direct that they receive the privileged treatment of ex-Service men?

Sir R. HORNE

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The instructions issued to the Employment Exchanges in this matter make no qualification or reservation as regards ex-Service men who have been in civilian employment since their release from the forces.
