HC Deb 21 October 1918 vol 110 cc446-7W
Sir ARTHUR SHIRLEY BENN

asked the Postmaster-General how many men of thirty-five years of age in Grade 1 above the rank of sorting clerk or skilled workman are retained by the Post Office; and how many men between forty-three and fifty years of age are being called up; and if an instruction has been issued protecting all officers from military service who are above the rank of sorting clerk or skilled workman whilst men of lower grade, who are likely to be less serviceable to the Army on account of age, are being called up?

Mr. ILLINGWORTH

There are about 350 men in Grade 1 between the ages of thirty-five and forty-three on classes superior to those of sorting clerks and telegraphists and skilled workmen who have not yet been released for military service. No men between the ages of forty-three and fifty are being released from the Post Office for military service at present, and no instruction in the sense indicated has been issued.
