HC Deb 14 November 1918 vol 110 c2908W
Mr. GILBERT

asked the Home Secretary whether, in matters affecting their conditions of service, the officials of the Police Union is now recognised as the medium of such negotiations?

Mr. WILES

asked the Home Secretary whether constables are now at liberty to join the National Police and Prison Officers' Union as at present constituted?

Mr. BRACE

As was stated by the Home Secretary in his speech on the 24th October, the men have been informed that they will not be prevented from joining the union, or any other lawful society, so long as it does not claim or attempt to interfere with the police regulations or discipline, or to induce members of the force to withhold their services, but that if any such event should occur, the members of the force will be called upon to sever their connection with it. The Police Union cannot be recognised as the medium for representations by the police. Representations as to conditions of service should be made to the Commissioner by the Representative Board, the constitution of which the Home Secretary described in his speech.
