§ General McCALMONTasked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether his attention has been called to the fact that the White Paper issued in December last subjected the special Grant for principals of schools of not less than 140 pupils to a condition which was not mentioned when the Grant was voted; whether seventy out of the 330 teachers affected have been refused this Grant in consequence; and whether he will now take immediate steps to remedy that state of affairs?
§ Mr. SHORTTAs regards the first and last parts of this question, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on 30th May last to the hon. Member for Dublin, St. Patrick's Division, in answer to a question on this subject. I am informed that owing to non-fulfilment of the condition as to high efficiency, the Grant 1843W of the supplemental salary has been withheld from at least the number of teachers mentioned in the question.
Major PEELasked the President of the Board of Education if he can state the present position of the scheme for superannuation for teachers in secondary schools?
§ Mr. E. STRAUSSasked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware that arbitration on the question of salaries has been refused the women teachers of London by the Education Committee of the London County Council; and, seeing that this right has been ceded to all other classes of workers, whether he proposes to take any steps with a view to inducing the Education Committee of the London County Council to grant the teachers' request?
Mr. FISHERI would refer the hon. Member to the answers given yesterday to the hon. Members for West St. Pancras and South Islington. I understand that the London County Council are arranging for a conference with representatives of the teachers to be held this week.
