HARVEYasked the Prime Minister whether he can give details of the latest administrative measures taken by President Wilson to deal with conscientious objectors to military service in the United States, and in particular with those known as absolutists, for whom no exemption is provided by the American Military Service Act?
§ Mr. MACPHERSONThe latest information I have is to the effect that forty conscientious objectors were recently tried in the United States of America and sentenced to penal servitude for life, such sentence having been subsequently commuted by the military authorities to twenty-five years' penal servitude.
