HC Deb 21 March 1917 vol 91 c1940W
Mr. CURRIE

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether he can state, approximately, the number of houses in Scotland affected by the restrictions placed upon: rents under emergency legislation; the rental of the same; the amount of money advanced on loan over them; and the rate of interest payable on such money?

Mr. MUNRO

I would refer my hon. Friend to the Appendix to the Minutes of Evidence before the Committee which reported to the Secretary for Scotland on this matter [Cd. 8154 of 1916], where he will find some of the information which he desires. I regret that I am not in a position to supplement it.

Mr. CURRIE

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether his attention has been drawn to cases where tenants of house property enjoying immunity under emergency legislation from an increase in the rent they themselves pay have sub-let rooms to munition workers and others at very high figures in such a way as to make money out of the Act restricting rents of small houses; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter?

Mr. MUNRO

My attention has not, so far as I remember, been drawn to the allegations referred to by my hon. Friend; but I would remind him that the Act does not deal with furnished lodgings, which were after considerable discussion excluded from its operation.
