HC Deb 05 July 1917 vol 95 c1320W
Mr. CROOKS

asked the President of the Board of Education whether, in view of the principle of equal work for equal pay, he will reconsider the proposed differentiation between the minimum salaries of male and female teachers; and whether, in view of the number of women teachers, he will consider the advisability of granting them increased representation on the Departmental Committee recently appointed to consider the principles which should determine the salaries of teachers in elementary schools?

Mr. HERBERT LEWIS

The differentiation as regards the suggested minimum salaries between men and women certificated teachers was adopted by my right hon. Friend only after very careful weighing of all the relevant considerations, and he has so far received no representations which induce him to alter his opinion. The Committee in question has already commenced its meetings and he is not prepared to make any additional appointments to it.
