HC Deb 19 April 1917 vol 92 cc1848-9W
Mr. BYRNE

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he is aware that there were a number of claims sent in to the Rebellion Property Losses Committee which have been refused on the grounds that the claims were made too late; and if he will issue instructions that would enable the claims of those who sustained losses to be considered on their merits?

Mr. DUKE

The Property Losses Committee has submitted its final Report, and is no longer in existence. Public notice was given that the latest date fixed for the presenting of claims was 12th August, 1916, but any case subsequently notified, in which a satisfactory explanation of the delay was furnished, was accepted and dealt with.

Mr. BYRNE

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if the Gaelic League, 25, Parnell Square, Dublin, applied for compensation for losses sustained during the rebellion in 1916; if he is aware that the Gaelic League is a non-political and non-sectarian organisation devoted solely to the interests of the Irish language movement; and what the Government's proposals are in reference to the claim?

Mr. DUKE

The claim of the Gaelic League has been received, and is under consideration.
