HC Deb 02 March 1916 vol 80 c1217W
Sir A. MARKHAM

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether, in view that numbers of married men attested under Lord Derby's scheme on the faith of his undertaking that single men would first be taken for service, he is aware many single men to escape military service have joined essential trades; and whether, seeing that many attested married men could equally well do the work in essential trades now being done by those single men, he will allow the attested married men to now join essential trades, setting at liberty the single men for military service.

Mr. TENNANT

No doubt it is true that a large number of single men have joined certified occupations. This matter is receiving the careful attention of the Government, but at present I cannot add to the statement I made in the House on the 29th February.
