HC Deb 21 May 1914 vol 62 c2150W
Mr. ADAMSON

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he is aware that Easton, Gibb and Son, contractors for work at the naval base, Rosyth, are paying the workmen doing the timber work in connection with the concrete and reinforced concrete work there 4s. to 8s. per week less than the rate agreed upon by the employers and workmen of that district; and whether he will take steps to enforce the provisions of the Fair-Wages Clause in connection with this contract?

Dr. MACNAMARA

I think that my hon. Friend must have in mind the wages paid to carpenters. The men employed on the timber work referred to are, however, in accordance with what I understand to be the usual practice on civil engineering works, not carpenters but timbermen, and are paid accordingly.
