HC Deb 30 July 1914 vol 65 cc1593-4W
Major ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether he can state the approximate quantities of spent herrings cured in and exported from Scotland in each year during the last twelve years?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

The only statistics available which relate specifically to spent herrings are those which deal with crown-branded herrings, and the quantities of crown-branded spent herrings cured and exported during the last twelve years were as follows:—

Cured Barrels. Exported Barrels.
1913 2,985 2,338
1912 10,816 10,039
1911 44,189 41,604
1910 39,850 39,115
1909 39,895 33,566
1908 32,276 46,341
1907 88,028 74,250
1906 50,002 42,677
1905 93,769 90,510
1904 135,915 125,012
1903 89,386 77,701
1902 127,282 127,929

The returns to the Fishery Board do not distinguish between the different classes of unbranded herrings, and consequently it is impossible to give the figures for such herrings, even approximately.
