HC Deb 10 July 1914 vol 64 cc1378-80W
Mr. RUPERT GUINNESS

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether he has any further statement to make respecting the applications for employment through Labour Exchanges of ex-soldiers, in view of the promised inquiries as to the feasibility of obtaining a portion, at any rate, of the information asked for?

Mr. BURNS

Certain additional information has been obtained as the result of the inquiries referred to in the hon. Member's question, and of this I am sending him a table containing a summary.

EXPLANATION OF THE TABLE.
Column 2 shows the numbers of men registered during the current period who were not previously registered at the Labour Exchange during the current year.
Columns 3 and 4 show the numbers of men who were not freshly registered during the current period, but had been on the register previously during the current year.
Column 6 shows the numbers of men who have been found employment by the Exchange during the current statistical period.
It should be explained that no men are "placed" who have not been registered (i.e., either as "fresh registrations" or as "re-registrations") during this period. While therefore the "placings" shown are only those among men registered for this period, they are in effect the total placings.
The numbers of Ex-Soldiers in Columns 2–6 are, of course, included under "total" in these columns and are then shown separately and as a percentage of the latter in each case. Column 5 gives this percentage for the total of Columns 2 to 4, while Column 7 shows the figures under "total" and "Ex-Soldiers" in Column 6 as a percentage of the figures under these heads in Column 5.
