Mr. GOLDMAN

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what monopolies exist in, and what are the revenues derived by, the Governments of Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, and Russia from monopolies in those countries?

Mr. ACLAND

With regard to Germany, France, Spain and Italy, I would refer the hon. Member for the information he desires, to the Financial Reports on these countries, recently published in the Annual Series of Diplomatic and Consular Reports, under the numbers 4839, 4854, 4981, 5001, and 5019. As regards Russia, there is a State Spirit monopoly which has been estimated by the Russian Government to yield £80,760,042 this year. In Turkey the State monopolies are as follows:—

  • Tobacco, estimated to yield £992,099.
  • Tombac (tobacco used in hookahs) estimated to yield £36,936, and
  • Gunpowder, estimated to yield £81,000.
