HC Deb 25 November 1912 vol 44 c852W
Mr. WILES

asked the Postmaster-General whether the temporary assistant postmen at the East Central Office, who have filled their positions for the last twelve months, are now being offered situations as messenger postmen; if the acceptance of such positions would necessitate an additional attendance of twelve hours per week with only 3d. per week extra pay; and whether, having regard to the length of time many of these men have served as temporary assistant postmen, he will consider if they can be absorbed into the established classes?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

The lads in question are tube attendants, whose ordinary wages are 16s. or 17s. a week for forty-eight hours' work. The privileges which they have enjoyed of working as temporary assistant postmen, with shorter hours, at a higher hourly rate of pay, gives them no preferential claim to established appointments, but they will no doubt all receive such appointments in their turn within the next few months.
