HC Deb 11 March 1912 vol 35 cc931-2W
Mr. RAWLINSON

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the conduct of a Metropolitan police constable named Stab, in July last, in consequence of which a member of the public named Treacher recovered in an action against Stab, tried last Friday, £50 damages for assault and £50 for slander; whether Stab is still acting as a police constable, and what steps, if any, he is taking in the matter; and whether, in case any further inquiry into the facts of the case is held, the plaintiff Treacher will be allowed to be represented at the inquiry?

Mr. HARRIS

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the case of Treacher v. Stab, in which the plaintiff recovered £50 damages for assault and false imprisonment and £50 for slander against the defendant, a police constable; whether any official inquiry was held into the circumstances of the case, and, if so, with what result; whether the police authorities have offered any expression of regret to the plaintiff for the injury inflicted on him; whether the action was defended by or at the expense of the police authorities; and whether any fund is at the disposal of those authorities by which they could re-imburse a man for the expense he has had to incur in order to restore his character?

Mr. McKENNA

The constable is suspended from police duty. I have communicated with the learned judge upon the whole case, and I cannot take any further steps in the matter until I have been informed of his views.
