HC Deb 10 June 1912 vol 39 c659W
Sir JOHN LONSDALE

asked the Chief Secretary if he is aware that the present average salary of lay secondary teachers in Ireland is for men £82 a year and for women £47, and that they are without any provision for superannuation; and if he is yet in a position to make any statement with respect to the Grant promised last year for the purpose of improving the position of these teachers?

Mr. BIRRELL

I am aware that according to the report of Messrs. Dale and Stephens on Intermediate Education in Ireland the average salaries of male and female assistant teachers in a large number of Irish Intermediate Schools in 1903 were as stated in the question. The question of the improvement of the position of these teachers is engaging my personal attention, but I am not yet in a position to make any statement on the subject.
