Mr. ALDEN

asked the Secretary to the Treasury if he will state the number of appointments of clerks of the first division during each of the years 1900–11 by examination and by promotion from the second division respectively; the total number of first division clerks at present employed; the number of appointments to the intermediate class by examination and by promotion from the second division respectively; and the total number of intermediate clerks employed at the present time?

The number of appointments to the first division in the years 1900–11 is as follows:—

These figures include twenty appointments in the offices of the Crown Agents to the Colonies and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. I am unable to state, without making inquiry of each Department, the total number of first division clerks at present employed. The total number of clerks of the intermediate class is about 720.
