HC Deb 21 May 1910 vol 116 c401W
Major JOHN EDWARDS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will institute a general inquiry into the question of exceptional profits made during and in consequence of the War with a view to the appropriation by the Government of the whole amount of such exceptional profits as a contribution towards the payment of the war bill?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

Exceptional profits made during the War, whether in consequence of the War or not, have already been taxed- For the last two years the tax has been at the rate of 80 per cent., and I am not prepared to pro pose a further retrospective levy.
